While this was required reading for a required college course, and I have ZERO interest in the subject matter of this book, (sorry!) I really enjoyed reading it. My mind and world-view was greatly expanded. What could be dry material is entertaining and well written. I'm glad they "MADE" me read this. I have referred back even after that class was over.

The bible of one of the worst and slickest economic cults ever devised, globalism as designed by the oligarchs. A recipe for disrespecting the middle and lower classes and concentrating political, economic, educational and information power in the hands of a very few families who mean us no good. Exactly what the Founding Fathers warned us about and we missed our cue to act. Too late now. We let Grover Norquist drown our democracy in his bath tub. To cleans your mind, follow with Naomi Klein's, The Shock Doctrine, and Sam Pizzigati's, The Rich Don't Always Win. It will probably take a year to finish Shock Doctrine but is well worth the time.

This book addresses some of the difficulties of globalization the study of which is especially pertinent today when the world seems to be shifting to isolationism and populism. The pendulum had maybe swung too far towards the Lexus at the expense of the Olive Tree and people want change from the status quo, all over the world. These very issues are addressed in this prophetic book. Thanks for another great read, Tom Friedman!

Amazing book! After reading it you you start to question if it was actually written at the end of the 1990s.It is impressive to see how clearly Thomas Friedman does what he also calls Information Arbitrage in pulling episodes and events from disparate parts of the world and in a wide variety of topics into one cohesive world view: globalization.The framework he proposes for globalization is the simplest and most useful I've ever read about and it sure made me understand much more of our world.A wonderful work of research, analysis and specially of writing went into this book.Funny thing: the book is super current even though it never mentions Google (because it was just a tiny company at the time).I'm already reading "The World is Flat" by the same author. It's a great read

The globalization of the world's economy is a phenomenon of the world after the demise of the Soviet Union. Friedman gives a brilliant tour de force of the causes and results of worldwide financial markets acting in accordance with their own perceived self-interest, bestowing wealth and new investment in countries based upon their potential to return a profit to investers. But he also describes what happens when the "Electronic Herd" of investors get spooked by unanticipated threats to their investments. Because countries differ widely in their ability to absorb and efficiently use investment capital, there are wide fluctuations in investment, with consequential social and economic damage as capital moves across national boundaries with the speed of a mouse click. Friedman uses an anecdotal approach it illustrate his points, and in the end, they coalesce into his principal themes, that predictability, transparency, and accountability are the standards against which all investment will be measured, and those who are unable or refuse to abide by these norms will suffer accordingly. He also analyzes the impact of these fluid financial markets on traditional societies, and the tensions that fluidity impose on the traditonal order of things. People want both the wealth that the new order brings, but also want the community and values that this financial fluidity tend to undermine. Striking a balance between hopes and dreams for a secure future, and protecting traditional community values, and providing a safety net for those who are unable to compete will be the principal tasks of political and financial leaders now and in the distant future. This book should be on every thinking person's reading list as a Must Read.

This is one of the best books I have ever read.Compiler construction is relatively hard topic with lot of theory needed to be understood before you can write even the most trivial compiler. Regular expressions, finite automata, BNF or attribute grammars are just few things you need to know and known them very well before you can write you own compiler.Many books paying too much attention to theory, but theory itself without many practical examples is nearly useless - especially if you are new in this field. You need examples, very good, thoroughly explained examples and even better source code where theory is transformed into practice. This is something that the book does and does it very well.Every topic is covered by such examples and at the end of every chapter there is practical implementation of scanner, parser (recursive descent), semantic analyzer and code generator in 'raw' C, using very simple (but useful) language called TINY.Another great thing is how the book is organized. First chapter introduces major steps in compiler design like scanning, parsing, semantic, runtime environment, code generation and subsequent chapters dealing with these topics. That's great, because after finishing each chapter you can write your own scanner (chapter 2), top down parser (chapter 4), bottom up parser (chapter 5), semantic analyzer (chapter 6) and runtime environment and code generation (last 2 chapters).Probably the best 'proof' how great this book is, is the fact that I as an absolute beginner in compiler construction (I have been working professionally as developer for 10 years), was able to write down my own scanner, parser (LL(1), LR(1), and also LALR(1)), semantic analyzer and code generator to 0x86 MASM ASSEMBLER in 'raw' C#, without using of any automatic generators like Lex or Yacc for simple C- language presented in the book (language has global and local variables, procedures, simple arrays and strings).Compiler Construction: Principles and Practice is the best book for everyone who has no previous experience with compiler construction. Book doesn't cover all advanced topics but it's the best material for those ones who are new in this field. After finishing book you will have enough theoretical and practical experiences to move to more advanced books (but also much more difficult to grasp) like famous Dragon book.

This book goes through the front-end and middle-end of compiler construction, though not so much on the back-end. It serves as a great introductory material on parsing methods, however it dismisses some more modern techniques onto its "references" section at the end of the chapter. As such, this book comes across as an introductory book, despite what its title suggests.I would thereby caution the prospective compiler writer/student looking to study compiler construction in-depth to avoid this book. Nevertheless I was quite pleased with the book because it presents the front and middle ends of compiler construction in a clear and concise way. Furthermore, it contains excerpts of code that implement a working compiler for a 'theoretical' language and a theoretical architecture (albeit in text. Unofficial code is available on github though). Which is surprising despite the lack of coverage on subjects like register allocation, dataflow analysis, etc.Tl;Dr, if you're looking for an introductory compiler book, without the complexities of back-end compiler construction, I recommend one to get this. Otherwise, either get the Dragon book or eingeering a compiler. This book wouldn't satisfy the adventurous compiler writer/student.

This was a book I purchased for class. Now that I have a better understanding I would like to go back and re-read this book. I think it skips some steps and does not show you how to build a compiler from the ground up. But it is still a great resource if you ever wanted to make your own compiler.

Has source code in back. Has a website you can download the source. Explains each part well. Felt confident about building a compiler after reading!!! The comp in this book uses structs for nearly all of it. Glad I found this one.

This is the best compiler book I have read. I have gone through 4 different compiler books. All have clear problems. This one is totally different, it is easy to read and understand. Furthermore, it is full of examples and come with solution manual for instructors. IMHO, it is the most suitable textbook for an introductory course in compilers.

We spent less time on the state of present day Egypt. We were generally aware of its recent history and decided it was safe enough for a trip we had wanted to make for a number of years. But it was obvious while we were there present day Egypt is not an easy place to live - dirty, rundown, divided. This book helps explain that part of the story. It is not a pretty picture, but important.

I could rarely find any text (in any form) that presented a true, unbiased, and professional encounter of the tragic events that happened in Egypt from late 2010 till early 2018. This is one of the few titles that did this. It did it well.

I haven’t finished the book yet but it’s clearly documenting one of the most important moments in Egyptian recent history I recommend it to anyone interested in understanding the reasons behind the Egyptian uprising failure

I read this book to begin to understand the complexity of that extraordinary time of hope and despair in Egypt.Kirkpatrick’s book puts a face on the juicy tale of revolution and then not and helped me appreciate the tension and the struggle. I liked Kirkpatrick’s personal association with so many of the characters in the drama.

I knew the Egyptian military has always been violent, corrupt and heartless and this book confirms exactly how they manipulated everyone to believe that democracy was possible. It reads like a documentary, written by the bureau chief of the ny Times who lived in Cairo with his family from 2010-2017. Excellent writing, reporting and very sad. i recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn why this world is like it is. Our generals supported the military through all this.
